We are in the same boat.”

Day hike to Routeburn Track Glenorchy side to Harris Saddle and back the same way (27km, 6hours) Started walking through the bush. The white and green trees, the moss hanging on the branches, the leaves swaying in the wind, feeling the breath of them. My hands and feet were painfully cold, and yet the sun seems to take some time to show itself behind the tall mountains. The river splashes on rocks and the artistic concave surface visualises the time of history. The indifference fall represents the beast of winter although the water molecules flow like flying individual stars in Milky Way. The colours are so intense that it is so unnatural.
It is impressive that the trail was made winder than any tracks as if a motorway. The gigantic huts should be rather called hotels even with a few stars. Snow starts appearing at about halfway point to Harris Saddle. The density of the trees gradually decreases and the bird calls become less. Rifleman are showing hopping dances in front of us, Tomtit is cheeky as usual and good at making us irresistible to smile, Paradise Shelducks couple is taking a chatty walk by the river and some other birds are secretly watching us behind the trees. The treeline suddenly ends once the rocky walkway begins. The elevation freezes the melted snow to warn us that they are completely in the winter mode up here. The surrounding sharp, icy mountains look down on us under the even more vast sky. They have been there for a long time, just watching the slowest changes of Earth and maybe devastating events too, and repeating the seasons after seasons. The southern sky is coloured in grey like a concrete ground. The misty, cold cloud approaches as a pack of fears that can swallow lives by its single blow. They invade the blue northern side. The lake tries being as harmless as possible because it knows waiting is all to the moody cloud to pass. The snow deepens which narrows the blood vessels in my body. The fingernails turn purple and the white breaths disappear in the air quick. Is this a beauty or a cruelty of the nature? I am humbled. I am Japanese but I don’t know where I’m from. I have many homes across the world but I don’t know where I belong to. No one can give a straight answer to this simple yet hard question, even myself, ever, maybe forever. But I found this place surrounded by mountains with a simple minimal life, where saves and relieves me. |
